![]() ![]() Parents need to know that The Night Gardener, a collaboration by the talented Fan brothers, is a lovely book about what can happen when a drab, depressed town is visited by a generous, spirited gardener who clips the trees into whimsical topiaries, bringing art and wonder. The gardener helps the community by bringing it beauty and generously takes William under his wing to mentor him. (Parents should be prepared to point out that it's not a good idea to wander through town at night and stay out all night as William does, even though you're curious.) William learns how to make topiaries himself and carries on the tradition. ![]() He follows his interests, looking for new topiaries and following the gardener. ![]() William is in grim circumstances, a colorless orphanage, but notices the beauty that appears before him and changes because of it. ![]()

![]() Why is this man so important to Achilles? Homer shows us the end of their story, and I wanted to know the beginning. We hear that Patroclus is ‘the most beloved companion’ of Achilles, but we don’t hear much more than that, even though Achilles’s reaction to his death is the crux of the entire Iliad. “I found both of these characters very mysterious in the original mythology. “I was really interested in those untold stories,” Miller says, sipping tea in the airy living room of her home just outside Philadelphia. ![]() In each book, Miller narrates a familiar tale in the voice of someone seen only from the outside in the originals: in the first, Achilles’s lover Patroclus, a minor character in the Iliad, and in her latest, Circe, the witch who turns men into pigs in the Odyssey. Madeline Miller’s new novel, Circe, to be published by Little, Brown in April, takes the same stimulating approach to ancient Greek literature as its bestselling 2012 predecessor, The Song of Achilles. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The one thing I had really wanted in Alpha was Valentine’s point of view, though I was a bit worried, because often times when we see the vulnerability in the man’s POV, they don’t seem quite as alpha and commanding. The thing I really loved about Beta was the demonstration of love between Kyrie and Valentine. But Beta took it to another level! Beta took the sexy, erotic romance, and brought in lots of elements of some of Jasinda (and her husband’s) more exciting (not THAT kind of exciting) and suspenseful, action packed reads, The Missionary and Captured.īeta does not stand alone, though it is a whole new storyline. It was one of the hottest books I’ve read this year, and I loved the commanding alpha presence of Valentine Roth. ![]() ![]() ![]() As Ceri searches for the answers an old enemy returns with murder on his mind. According to Mr Mitchell, this first Bahamian award does “not fit into the legal definition in the (law) for a national hero”. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1959.Īpparently, unlike PLP chairman Fred Mitchell, the Queen found Sir Roland a “fit and proper” person to qualify for her knighthood. During that time – 1964 – he became the first Premier of a self-governing Bahamas. His parliamentary record is yet to be broken. He was the longest-serving member of the House of Assembly, successfully contesting the Harbour Island seat in 1925 at the age of 27, and serving in all branches of parliament as a member for Shirlea until his retirement in 1977 – a total of 52 years. Of course, the “rags to riches” life of Sir Roland reads almost like a fairy-tale, but, unlike so many fairy tales which concentrates on the hero, many Bahamians - and even the country - was touched by his generosity. INSTEAD of being ashamed of their ignorance and keeping their mouths firmly shut, the squabbling over the posthumous award of The Bahamas’ first National Heroes is continuing with Englerston MP Gladys Hanna-Martin claiming that to recognise the late Sir Roland Symonette, the longest serving member of parliament, with such a reward was “perverse”. ![]() ![]() ![]() What most people need instead is, well, range.Īccording to Epstein, the world for nearly everyone is not a place where specialization - which he argues leads to myopic thinking - is truly beneficial. Range: Why Generalists Triumph In A Specialized World, a new book by David Epstein, a former investigative and science reporter at ProPublica, argues that this theory of specialization applies to a limited number of skills and fails to set its adherents up for success. It makes intuitive sense: If you want to get good at something, work hard at it until you are. That, Gladwell argued, was what successful people did. Throughout that book, he frequently cited the so-called "10,000-Hour Rule," which stated that to master something, one needed to practice it correctly for that amount of time.
